Dear Parents,
I have been thoroughly enjoying your children! I am amazed that
they have been here for a week already. We have been so busy.
The children seem to be settling into their "regular selves",
which I am happy about. Today during English class, I noticed
that Masaki and Kotaro are both getting to be more confident.
They are staying on a farm and the reports are they are having
a lot of fun with the sheep and deer. Each of them are taking
risks with speaking and impressing me with how they are beginning
to pick up the language.
Nanami and I have bonded. She was not feeling well after our
car ride to San Francisco yesterday. After hugging her for a few
minutes, she stayed close to me all day. I was delighted to make
a new friend in her. Mami and Chihiro are playing basketball during
our breaks, either with the boys or on their own. They have been
doing well in class also.
Tsuyoshi has now started translating for the group and is volunteering
during tours, any time there is a chance. Today, during our visit
to an artist's studio and house, he began translating the specifics
of welding. While on a tour of the local fire department, he quickly
raised his hand to dress in a complete fire fighting uniform.
He accomplished this task in about 2 minutes which was the goal.
After that, Kyonosuke took on the challenge as did Masaki.
Naoto and Naoaki are staying with a lovely family with a warm
and caring host mom who wanted their parents to know she is taking
very good care of them. They are playing basketball during our
breaks and, along with all the children, are also practicing (and
getting good at) practical English such as, I need a drink of
water and I need to use the bathroom.
All of the children had a chance to sit inside a fire engine today
and hold a large fire hose while on our tour. Tomorrow we will
be going to an organic community supported farm. They will be
making solar ovens with other American children. They will also
be volunteering on the farm.
All of the children are doing well in class and seem happy.
I will sure miss them when they leave, and for now I am having
a lot of fun seeing the world through their eyes.
Warmly,
Karen Perry, MAT
