Day one:
I arrived at Kagoshima airport and met my family today! I was very sleepy because I had travelled for around 16 hours, but still excited! When I met my host family they had a sign with my name on it. Some family members weren’t there due to sports but I got to meet the mother, oldest sibling, and the youngest sibling! They were all very kind and welcoming! My Japanese isn’t great so it was difficult to communicate some of what I wanted to say. However, they know some English so it was a little easier to communicate! Before we went home, me and the oldest sibling visited a convenience store. I got Pokari Sweat and Meiji Milk Chocolate, which were both very delicious! When we arrived at the house they showed me to my room and after bathing I fell asleep very quickly! It was a good day and I can’t wait to see what we will do next!
Day two:
I woke up today around 7 am. My host family had made me eggs, sausage, and bread! It was very delicious! Afterwards me and my host family did the dishes and then cleaned up the house. Once this was done, the oldest sibling and I walked to his friend’s house who we then went with to visit two shrines! One was big and the other was small. The big shrine looked very pretty! I took many pictures of the shrines! We had visited a store near the largest shrine and I wore some traditional armor that the store provided! It was very funny. After this we went back to the house and the oldest sibling made me ramen which was super good! When we finished the ramen we all relaxed and I took a nap. Once I woke up, I got to try my Japanese school uniform and then help with preparations for dinner. I got to help make Takoyaki! It was very fun and tasty! While I had been making this the other two siblings who weren’t at the house arrived and I got to meet them along with their friends! Their friends were really kind and gave me Japanese food I never had before! The food was very tasty! Once we finished dinner, I got to show my host family different American dollars and they showed me Japanese Yen. I then arm wrestled the youngest boy sibling and won. After this me and the family went to bed. Today was very fun and I can’t wait to go to Japanese school tomorrow!
Day 3:
Today I went to Japanese high school for the first time. I woke up very early and was kinda of tired but excited! After eating breakfast I put on my school uniform and went with my host brother to the train station to commute to school. There were way more students taking the train than I originally thought would. In America we don’t go to school by train. Once we arrived at the school, me and my host brother separated and I got to meet the principal of the school who was very kind and welcoming! After talking to her about the school and myself, I met みずき who would accompany me throughout the day and took me to his class. I was very nervous and had to introduce myself to the class. It was easier thought because the teacher spoke very good English and reassured me I would be fine. I the. Went through the first 4 periods meeting the people who sat around me, and they were all very funny! Once lunch came around I had my first bento box lunch. It was very tasty! We also had PE that day, so I played basketball and had a very good time! Once the end of the day came around me and the other transfer student got to tour the school with a English teacher and got a good sense of the layout of the school! Afterwards I hung out with students from my class while I waited for my host brother to finish a test. We then went home and relaxed mostly. Dinner was very good and I also got to have food we got from shopping at a store before coming home. Today was very nice and I can’t wait for the next!
Day 4:
When I woke up I learnt my host brother had caught a sickness. I had gone with a friend of his to school by car. Their mom drove us! When I got to school I had taken up the mission of learning and memorizing lots of names today. Throughout the day I had been constantly asking the same people their name to memorize them. It was hard because the names aren’t very common for what I’ve heard, so their uniqueness actually makes it harder to remember. Especially since an accent is involved in saying them correct. I also taught everyone in my class an American greeting called dapping up! After I taught a couple it started spreading across the class and it was very funny! The day felt a little slow and I was a little sleepy but it was still very fun! After school I had gone to rock band club which was so much fun!! I got to play bass, guitar, piano, and drums along with meeting many new people! They were all very good musicians! Afterwards when I got back home I had relaxed before watching my host family try the Reese’s peanut butter cups I gifted them. They really liked it and I was happy! Then I had been given a apron and bandana for tomorrow because I will be making cookies in home economics! I’m very excited and can’t wait!
Day 5:
Today, I gave myself the mission to remember everyone’s names in my class and to meet all of them at least once. By the end of the day, I had all the names memorized! Today went by kind of slow and I got sleep during the three math classes. However, when lunch came around I went to the lunchroom and got my first food from a Japanese school cafeteria! My friends followed me down and ate with me. Afterwards, me and them went back up to the class and I decided to play an English pronunciation game with them! It was very funny! I had them try to say pterodactyl, Worcestershire sauce, and supercalifragilisticexpialodocious correctly without giving them too many hints. It was very entertaining and one girl had guessed the third word correct! She got a small round of applause! During the last period I got to make pasta in class and it was very good! I just followed whatever my group told me to do and made it successfully! After school me, the other transfer student named Kaylie, her host sister, and two of her friends toured some clubs after school. We played many games and talked to many people. Once this was down and I went back home I decided to play the English pronunciation game with my host family. They also struggled and it was fun for all of us! Today was really enjoyable and I hope it gets better form here.
Day 6:
Today was very fun and productive! I brought school work from America to do in class with the subjects I couldn’t do or understand enough to participate in. It made the classes go by quicker and helped lighten my workload for when I go back! I got a teacher to also try the English pronunciation game and he also challenged me to say hard Japanese words. He was very funny and one of my favorite teachers to hang around with! Towards the end of the day I got to play basketball for the last time at this school! I will miss playing P.E. games with them. After school me, Kaylie, and her friends all went to a convenience store and got a variety of things. I got chocolate coins and ice cream! When we walked back we took a look at the sports clubs and I even played volleyball with some of the members of volleyball club which was very fun! We visited rock and brass band club too! Afterwards me and my host brother went back home by car. Me and my host family listened to music on the tv and they had me try a marble game after dinner! It was confusing but very fun! I am both excited and sad for tomorrow and I hope after tomorrow I will have a chance to see all of my classmates again.
Day 7:
Today was probably my favorite but also the saddest so far. Each period was really fun! I participated in English classes by helping my classmates, got to play bass guitar in front of my classmates, and I got so many gifts! Even from students in other classrooms! Once the end of the day came I took many pictures with all of my classmates and others I had invited from other classrooms! I was so happy to have made all these friends before I left and I hope they feel the same way about me too! After I took pictures I went to go thank the principal with the other transfer student but couldn’t find her. So instead we thanked the vice principal and went our separate ways. I went to after school clubs including rock band club and archery club, where me and another student planned a hangout tomorrow with any of the classmates that could go! I can’t wait to hang out with them! Afterwards when I went hope I mainly relaxed and got to make homemade gyoza! It was delicious! While today was kind of sad I was happy to experience Japanese school life with these students!
Day 8:
I got to hang out with my friends one more time today! When I woke up me and my host brother went to the mall and I got a couple of clothing items I really liked! I didn’t know Japan had such good baggy jeans and good hats! After a little while one of my other classmates came and I went with him to Kura Sushi where all my other classmates were so we could eat together! Everything there was so delicious except the sea urchin sushi. That sushi had a horrible aftertaste but everything else was very good! We wanted to do karaoke after but we couldn’t find any reservations so we decided to go back to the mall before I had to leave. We walked around and looked at arcades and clothes. I then had to leave so I said my last goodbyes and left with my host family to go back to the house. I got to eat dinner with all of them and the oldest sibling who I hadn't met in person until then. I was then picked up by an mncc staff member to stay with since my host family had caught the flu. I said my final goodbyes and we went on our way to his house so I could stay the night. I got to meet his wife before I went to sleep too! I am excited to see who I get to meet next!
Day 9:
I met my new host family today! They are all very kind and I share interests with them such as photography, snowboarding, plants, and more! Their house interests me so much with both the interior and exterior. After I had settled in we went out and I got to have beef udon at a restaurant which was amazing! Afterwards we went to an aquarium and watched dolphins outside of in the water. Once this performance ended we walked around for a little before getting on a ferry to Sakurajima island. It really surprised me that the volcano blows smoke out constantly and everyone just thinks it’s completely normal. When we got to the island we visited a shrine and I got to eat matcha ice cream before leaving to back to the aquarium where we then went back to the home. I relaxed and we had some hot pot. It was very good! I can’t wait to see what else we do in the coming days!
Day 10:
Today was very fun! I got to meet many of my new classmates and everyone is very friendly! This class feels a little bit more quiet than last one but they still like to talk to me and are fun to be around. I took the train to school today with my host sister and her friend. I like riding the train to school a little bit because of the views I get to see! It’s very pretty! English was also very fun because the teacher had been asking me for help on some pronunciation of complicated English words, which I was happy to help with! After school I walked around with my host sister and a couple of her friends to look at after school clubs that I might be interested in! I got to meet volleyball club players, art club players, and many more! After this my host sister, her friend, and myself went to the mall. I got to get Subway and some new pairs of jeans, even getting one for a friend back in America! Afterwards we walked around and looked at some Japanese candy stores and Christmas decorations that were put up. We then went back to her town by train and said bye to her friend. When I got back home I did some homework and went to sleep. Today was a great start to the week and I can’t wait for the rest!
Day 11:
Today was pretty calm. I got to play soccer for PE and it was so much fun! Everyone else doesn’t play soccer so it was funny to see how they would play compared to me. Everyone other period was pretty relaxed and I went to go get chocolate bread along with apple juice after 2nd period! The chocolate bread tastes so amazing! I will have more of it in the future when I can! Once school ended me and my host sister’s friend went to art club! My host sister didn’t come because she was playing rugby. Art club was so interesting! The room has lots of art and sculptures that they had made and they all looked really cool! I got to draw a house on a big piece of paper while everyone else either did art, homework, or ate snacks. Once this was done, I went with my host sister and her friend to Family Mart and got ice cream with a layer of chocolate on the outside, which was very tasty! Me and my host sister then took the train back to my host family’s house and we got to have ramen for dinner. Today was a little bit slow but overall eventful!
